Large turnout at the Kansas stadium and surrounding roads marked a spectacular Fourth of July celebration. An estimated 15 000 to 20 000 sat inside the stadium, with total attendance topping 25 000 as cars filled approaching streets and nearby hills. The Liberty Memorial high school band opened the program under Oliver Hobbs, followed by a major fireworks show featuring a 500 foot ascent, colorful shells, parachute light chains, and a large three piece rocket finale. Bleachers Collapse Injures 50 During July 4 Pageant
In Waukegan Illinois more than 50 people were injured when wooden bleachers collapsed at a Independence Day pageant. About a thousand spectators fell in a tangled mass as the structure gave way during a national anthem and fireworks display. Police firemen and guardsmen aided the crowd. Four of 15 hospitalised had broken bones. The event closed a four day American Legion festival.
