Greece and Denmark signaled participation in European economic discussions linked to the Marshall plan amid a Paris conference of 24 nations. Republicans claim enough votes to override President Truman's veto on a tax bill set to cut taxes for about 18 million taxpayers in 1948. Two district 14 United Mine Workers officials headed to Washington for the miners policy committee meeting. Henry Allai president and Joe Hromek secretary departed for the session Saturday.
George Starkey, Office of Veterans Affairs representative in Lawrence, was elected commander of the Dorsey Liberty post Number 14 of the American Legion at the annual election meeting. He succeeds Mark Alexander who resigned to move to San Jose, California. Alan Asher was elected vice commander with Ernest Pontius’s term ending July 17. Other 1947 48 officers include John Pickens Byron Beery and C T Hough Ernest Klooz Father George Towle Simon Hurwitz. Retiring officers named.
An army search plane reports sighting wreckage at sea 200 miles northeast of Miami, believed to be a C 54 cargo plane. A 100 foot freight ship Marsean, seven men aboard, five days overdue from Miami to Puerto Padre, Cuba, also under Coast Guard search.
A 40 000 bushel Gano elevator in Garden City Kansas burned early today with police hinting at arson. A man with a gasoline can was detained for investigation after being seen near the fire and identified by a station attendant. Firefighters fought the 80 foot high structure as grain storage capacity in the region was strained by the harvest.
Flood waters breached a five foot sandbag barrier in Grand Tower Illinois flooding most of the town. Mayor Jesse Grammer says residents escaped to high ground with one foot injury casualty. Water reached 40.1 feet, highest on record, as neighbors sought shelter in schools and spared homes. Army engineers expect other levees to hold barring more rain.
Gov. Frank Carlson reported a slight improvement in the wheat harvest but urged Kansans with idle equipment and neighboring states to supply combines and harvest gear. He noted 200 combines from Oklahoma and 25 from Colorado entered Kansas, with 150 more crews en route from Canada.
Roy W. Elliott, longtime comptroller of Wichita University since 1923, resigns effective August 1. President Jeantinn announces the move. Elliott will stay in Wichita as a member of the board of regents and treasurer. The notice includes references to other university posts and an aviation show at Lawrence Airport.

Kaw Valley growers graded Number 1 potatoes for sale to the government under the potato support price program. Fifteen carloads of Number 1 potatoes moved to Midwest markets, with sales at $3 and up per hundred pounds. The program is channeled through George H. Butell, ACA chairman, with B size potatoes inspected during grading and a support price of £1.17 per hundred pounds.
In Vicksburg Mississippi on July 4 General Dwight D. Eisenhower asserted that without U S help to build a system of world peace humanity may suffer a Golgotha of a third world war. He urged nations to cooperate for the common good or face gradual decay or total war. He stressed extending cooperation globally begins with U S efforts at home.
General Dwight D. Eisenhower told reporters in Vicksburg Mississippi he would not claim the presidency but would not deny the idea either. He repeated that he has no political aspirations and said when he becomes Columbia University president he will continue to preach Americanism.
Secretary Clinton Anderson announced American authorities will ship at least 300000 tons of food each month to the combined British and American zones of Germany. He said the shipments will help meet the 1550 calorie daily ration for the average German consumer, which has not been met for months.
In a high scoring game the Brooklyn Dodgers routed the New York Giants 16 to 7. The contest ended early after eight innings to clear the park for an afternoon game.
A convoy of market-bound wheat trucks arrived at Lawrence elevators shortly after 7 a m as farmers push to market ripe crops before potential rain or wind. Delays and a tight freight car supply threaten movement, with eight cars available yet a 16 000 bushel capacity and some elevators closing temporarily. Total Lawrence wheat deliveries near 25 000 bushels yesterday and about 75 000 bushels for the season. price around 1 90 per bushel with slight fluctuations.
Thirteen people died in eight states during the start of the holiday travel period as about 30 million autos hit the roads. The nation braces for a record three day weekend with rail and air lines forecasting peak passenger business and the National Safety Council predicting 275 highway fatalities by Sunday night. Florida led with five deaths. Arizona two. Alabama Montana New York Ohio South Carolina Utah one each. New York and New Jersey reported additional accident deaths.
Rome July 4 United States and Italy signed an accord under the 350 million foreign relief program to supply food and medicines. Ambassador Dunn Premier de Gasperi and Foreign Minister Sforza signed the documents. The fund will also aid Trieste Greece Austria Hungary Poland and China as Italy fights black market pressures and focuses on fats meat sugar and other scarce materials.
Davidson, a custodian at K U Memorial Stadium, was injured when a splinter from a circular saw pierced his wind pipe. He spent a restless night at Lawrence Memorial Hospital after emergency treatment downtown.
Prague reports that Premier Gottwald and Foreign Minister Masaryk left the city for Moscow amid alarm over Russia’s rejection of the Marshall plan. They hope talks with Molotov or Stalin will clarify Czechoslovakia’s position and the economic options facing Europe.
A record crowd between 25 000 and 20 000 is expected tonight at K U Memorial Stadium for Lawrence postwar Fourth of July fireworks. Governor Carlson Mayor Parsons and Chancellor Malott will speak during a three hour program of music sports and fireworks. Local officials aim to crown the event as the biggest prewar style celebration with full police traffic control and Legion VFW concessions.
