Latin aids spelling study urged by Ullman in Indianapolis
University of Chicago Latin professor B L Ullman told the American Classical League that Latin study in high schools improves English spelling and understanding. He cited that over half of English words are Latin in origin and 75 percent of common Latin-based spellings error rates are remediable with proper Latin teaching methods. Mississippi’s Alexander Bondurant warned of a Latin teacher shortage in the South.
