Madison Square Garden July Fourth reports show McAdoo forces vetoing invitations to speak and delaying any clear nominee. Smith and McAdoo factions hold veto power, signaling a hopeless deadlock as delegates weigh possible abstentions and alignments. Senator Ralston asks to withdraw, while Ohio may shift Cox votes.
A historical tally lists multiple ballots from sixty-two to sixty-six for McAdoo, Smith, Davis of West Virginia, Underwood, Cox, Glass and others. Totals hover around 1,098 to 1,698 across ballots with varying scores for each candidate.
The Indiana senator withdrew his name at the Democratic national convention as the split persisted between McAdoo and Smith forces. Indiana delegates shifted to McAdoo, while others pressed for Glass, and Cox and Goeke also withdrew to seek party harmony amid the July 4 deliberations.
William G. McAdoo, Democratic presidential hopeful, told about a hundred women at his New York headquarters that he would fight to the last drop of blood. He declared he had no selfish interest and that the life of the Democratic party and the fate of democracy were at stake.
In Cleveland on July 4 Senator Robert M LaFollette accepts the invite to run for president as the conference for progressive political action opens. Speakers including William H Johnson Henrik Shipstead Mabel Costigan and John M Nelson frame the rally around fighting Bob and his candidacy with mass cheers and broad denunciations of old parties.
Kansas forecast shows a somewhat unsettled night with a move toward warmth by Saturday. Western areas may rise a bit more while conditions stay breezy and variable through the period.
Senator Capper voiced pride in the nation's war record and a growing desire to end all wars. He urged universal conscription of wealth and manpower if needed, praised the American Legion, cited hearings on the bill, and noted both major parties backing the measure for a National Defense Act.
City opponents resist authorizing curb pump replacement on Massachusetts street arguing the commission lacks power to grant permits for gasoline pumps. Mayor Holliday supports replacing the pump, while no action is taken. Work begins on the replacement as the issue plays out with hospital expansion bids and Boys Day plans for Jackie Coogan.
Herman P. Farris of the National Prohibition party formally accepted the nomination today responding to the notification committee. He pledged that if elected and placed in the White House the nation would be “white in deed” and free from oil or booze.
Geo L Kreeck chair Near East Relief in Lawrence announced a week long drive July 14 21 to raise 250 barrels of flour at about 5 per barrel. Donations already fund about 75 barrels from school children and volunteers. Jackie Coogan will thank Lawrence August 5 en route to a food ship port. Contributions may be mailed to Watkins National Bank for the fund, all money stays in Lawrence.
In Kansas City on July 4, holes appeared on the track during the 250 mile national championship. Officials halted the race after 150 miles with sixteen drivers starting. Ernie Ansterberg led at 25 miles at 117.8 mph, and remained leader at 50 miles. By 100 miles Jimmy Murphy led at 113.5 mph, with Tommy Milton second and Bennet Hill third.
In Chattanooga Tennessee the Methodist Episcopal Church south holds a special conference vote at 5 pm today on accepting the union plan with the northern branch. Debate centered on a minority report opposing union versus the majority report favoring acceptance.
A Lawrence Fourth of July event at Woodland Park drew many residents. Families picnicked as free coffee was served by the Chamber of Commerce. Senator Arthur Capper spoke, the Declaration of Independence was read, and a baseball game plus races closed the afternoon. A band concert, fiddler contest, fireworks, and dancing topped the night. Some headed to Kansas City for races while others golfed at the Country Club. City ordinances limited firecrackers, pushing celebrations to the country.
Arthur L. McKenney of Kansas City Kansas, a Republican candidate for Congress in the Second district, will address voters at South Park tomorrow night at o'clock after visiting the town earlier this week to arrange his Saturday night remarks. In a Journal-World letter he notes his Kansas birth near the north line, 40 years ago, his high school and law studies, and mentions a family lineage of Republican preachers and politicians.
About forty Ottawa Rotary members hosted a gathering last night at the Ottawa Country Club for forty Rotarians from Ottawa and twenty Rotary Anns from Lawrence. Lawrence Rotarians joined a luncheon, round table discussion, golf on the Country Club course, and a basket dinner with their wives. The evening closed with an elaborate fireworks display and compliments to Rotarian Cook of Ottawa.
A restraining order prevented city police from arresting Lawrence taxi operators without meters. The injunction hearing was set for Monday in district court. The suit by E Neal, Lawrence taxi owners, targets the city’smeter requirement enacted July 1. Attorney WW Dodds represented Neal.
W I Whitney and family moved yesterday into their newly purchased home at 718 West Fourth street, Lawrence, from 120 Tennessee street. Whitney is general agent for Bank Savings Life Insurance of Topeka and came to educate his children. A Lawrence woman who adverted furniture for sale in the Journal-World sold most items within a day and the rest the following day. Downtown stores closed most of the Fourth of July day for observance, with groceries and clothing shut while meat markets had limited hours. Park Superintendent Charles Yewduil of 1233 Connecticut street is ill at home. A flag display folder campaign distributed in Lawrence yesterday by the Ku Klux Klan.
