Private dispatches from Santiago report Gen Shafter with 17 000 infantry and 3 sieve guns attacking Spanish positions before Santiago aided by 6 000 rebels under Garcia. Spaniards defend with 2 000, Spanish losses described as heavy while American losses are heavy. El Caney assault by 300 defenders under Gen Veradero is described as severe with renewed attack.
A war report describes cross artillery, heavy rifle and cannon fire, and Spanish efforts at the San Juan fortifications. It notes U.S. gains around a large blockhouse, captures of 200 Spanish soldiers and 62 officers, and 2,000 total prisoners yesterday on the right. Spanish losses are believed to be about 2,000 killed and wounded. Heavy fighting resumes on the right as the correspondent prepares to ship to the sea coast.
From Willot July 4 report says Shafter demands surrender of the town by noon tomorrow. Spanish could spare women and children to depart. foreign consuls in Santiago urge authorities to allow safe evacuation until Tuesday noon. The bombardment would follow if terms not met.
Four batteries of artillery planted in position this morning bombarded the San Juan quarter of Santiago and the Spanish left. Gen Lawton’s reinforced troops pressed forward with hot fire, while Samopson’s heavy guns shelled through the forenoon. American shells exploded with tremendous force.
Wasmisato July 4. After talks with high officials a prominent senator said the understanding was that Shuster's demand for the surrender of Santiago expired at 10 a.m. today. The Spaniards asked twenty four hours. This was granted with the understanding that no military operations would occur in the meantime.
Miles reports two Shafter dispatches on July 4. One declares mastery of the situation and ability to hold the enemy any length of time. The other states Shafter’s demand for Santiago’s surrender is being considered by Spanish authorities.
The First Rhode Island brigade, including the Third Missouri and Second Tennessee, is prepared for orders to move to Santiago. They may depart today or Tuesday, embarking from Newport News. The unit, commanded by Gen. Nelson Cole, is a permanent force with 500 rounds per man for the Third and khaki uniforms being rushed. Mapum, July 4, 10 a.m. Vara De Rey and two Linares aides de camp were killed, and Linares is said to have died of his wounds. A fire at Harry Stevens' store on Massachusetts street threatened the block after a boy firing fireworks started it.
