Elementary schools cite absence of male teachers
In Burbank California Disney Elementary School features Patrick Carmen the district’s only male teacher in five years. Across California only 14 percent of public elementary teachers are men while men comprise 38 percent of middle and junior high and 52 percent of high school staff. Educators say more male teachers provide role models and help shape children’s identity, with Carmen teaching kindergarten and sharing duties with Teresa Scheerer.
