Alpha Chapter of Kappa Phi received the Le Sourd cap for outstanding progress at the 1963 National Council of Chapters held at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. Priscilla Burton was re elected national editor and works at KU Medical Center in Kansas City Kan as editorial assistant in the office of informational services.
Jayhawk 4-H Club held its annual tour Sunday afternoon. Members met at Grant School at 1 30 PM and traveled by truck to nine member homes showing gardens cattle horses sheep and rabbits. The tour ended at William Hudson farm with cookies and cold drinks. Next meeting at Grant School.
The Youth Fellowship of Evangelical United Brethren Church at 1501 Mass. St. hosts an ice cream social on Thursday July 11. Serving runs 6 30 to 8 30 p m. The public is invited.
In Eldon Missouri a 72 year old matron recounts Betsy Ross as a strong willed widow who ran Betsy Ross’s flag shop after her husband’s death. She says Betsy advised Washington on star shapes and stripes, proposed adding stars for new states while keeping the original 13 stripes, and possibly earned payment for the first flag in 1777.
The article notes Betsy Ross novel teapots and a Las Vegas wedding officiated by a justice of the peace. Miss Washington aged 28 wed Lane aged 35 in a ceremony described as the sixth for the bride and second for the groom.
Blues singer Dinah Washington and Detroit Lions defensive halfback Dick Lane were spotted at a Las Vegas gathering. The AP report notes the pairing at the event, highlighting Washington’s performance and Lane’s NFL status.
