Agreement Reached To End Western Electric Strike
A tentative agreement was reached early today between Western Electric Co and 17 000 CIC telephone equipment installers to end a nationwide walkout that began two days earlier. The CIO Communications Workers of America said the parties are in tentative agreement and will sign the contract, with terms announced after. The strike affected 44 states and the District of Columbia over wages and grievance procedures. Maine New Hampshire Vermont and Montana were not affected as they run their own installation and maintenance. The CWA contract had expired May 2 after failed negotiations.

Huge Fertilizer Plant Near Lawrence To Begin Production
The Consumers Cooperative Association will start shakedown tests in late July and aims for nitric acid and ammonium nitrate production at an $18 million plant east of Lawrence by late August or September. The facility will employ about 290 people and produce 83 000 tons of products yearly plus 13 200 tons of anhydrous ammonia and 13 900 tons of nitrogen solutions.
