Willkie considers a three member campaign leadership with John D. M. Hamilton or Russell Davenport likely in key roles as he aims to name a campaign head by Friday. He noted a strong, vigorous organizer could be a business, newspaper, or political figure and hinted at an important policy announcement on contributions. War bulletin reports British air forces attacked Kiel canal last night and heavily bombed the German battleship Scharnhorst in a floating dock. The attack followed reports of Pi heavy explosions along the French coast near Calais. A German mission at an Argentine technical college has been suspended.
London reports a new wave of U boat activity with German and Italian torpedoes causing heavy losses to British merchant shipping. For the week ended June 23, 88 259 tons of shipping were sunk, amid air threats and extended escort duties from Brest to St Jean de Luz.
In Sign Seattle a sporting goods shop displayed prize winning fish with a Take One box of vacation pamphlets. Patrons rapidly depleted the pamphlets. A woman folded a newspaper, claimed a big fish, and left. The proprietor removed the Take One sign.
New York July 2 Wendell Willkie announced a 12 member advisory committee to guide his campaign through its duration headed by Governor Harold Stassen. Principal advisors include Representative Joseph W Martin Governor Raymond Baldwin David Ingalls Charles Halleck Governor Ralph Carr Ruth Hanna McCormick Simms Paul Krusi Oren Root Jr Mrs Ruth der Young Koehler William Ditter and Senator John Townsend.
Berlin reports RAF raids and German counter actions with Wick in Scotland and Bristol Canal targeted. The communique notes Guernsey and Jersey occupation, ships attacked off Torquay, Bristol Blenheim losses, Kiel raids, and increased enemy aircraft shot down total to 23.
The Senate military committee approved Henry L. Stimson’s nomination as secretary of war by 14 to 3 after two hours of testimony. Stimson denied ties to politics and any third term talk with Roosevelt. Col. Frank Knox testified on being named navy secretary without commitments to third term, stressing focus on aiding allies amid the fall of France.
The United States closed the fiscal year ending June 30 with a net deficit of 3 612 065 036 71 dollars. Receipts totaled 5 924 836 402 76 while expenditures reached 9 666 085 539 47. Receipts rose mainly from social security taxes customs and internal revenue. income taxes fell by about 64 million. Daniel D. Hornaday 92 retired educator and former county school superintendent died at his home 514 Mississippi street Sunday. Services were held at Schubert funeral home with burial in Maplewood cemetery Emporia. He helped found Abilene Baptist church and later Christian denomination, aided Dickinson County Community high school at Chapman, and backed Populist governor Lorenzo Lewelling in 1892. He lived in Lawrence 15 years and was survived by wife Jessie and two daughters.

Topeka July 2 Harry H Woodring says he has finished public service and will not run for the Democratic nomination for US senator in 1942. He adds he will stay active in politics but refuses another political job after ten years in public life. He emphasizes returning to private citizen life.
Douglas county shows total tangible valuation at 36,122,947 with 53,267 more than last year and intangible value at 4,834,183, up from 38,670,166. City of Lawrence leads tangibles at 14,903,007 and 4,043,321 intangibles. Budgets and levies for 1941 must be certified by August 25.
G Warren Spaulding, superintendent, announced the Haskell Institute budget for the new fiscal year totals 238,050 dollars. Salaries and school needs are 207,000 dollars with 23,000 dollars for general repairs, 2,500 dollars for the school paper, and 5,550 dollars for miscellaneous items. The allotment was received from the authorities.
Berlin reports that the German high command calls the France campaign the greatest victory in history. It cites unity under National Socialism and lists German losses totaling 156,492 against over 1.9 million French captives, including 29,000 officers.

Also noted were bombing attacks on a British convoy in the southeastern Mediterranean and aerial assaults on Augusta Sicily. Air fights occurred over Ethiopia and British Somaliland.

Lawrence gears up for a citywide July 4 celebration from 9 a.m. to about 10 p.m. Events include a soapbox derby at Mt Oread starting at the KU power plant, seven softball games at Woodlawn and South parks, boat races on the river at 2 p.m. a 1:30 p.m. parade, surfboard demonstrations by five Lawrence youths, an 8 p.m. band concert and community sing, and an 8:30 p.m. fireworks display at Memorial Stadium. Prizes, gold medals, and affiliations with softball associations are noted. crowds are urged to stay off the grass and avoid firecrackers. Free parking will be available near the stadium.
British bombers attacked Kiel in the great naval base area and towns in northwestern Germany. The air ministry reported many hits at Kiel and raids on Cologne Wessel Texel seaplane base. Four British planes failed to return.
Leavenworth Kan July 2 Two people were hurt in yesterday's heavy rain and electrical storm. Laverne Daniels 20 son of Earl and Mrs Daniels near Jar balao was struck by lightning and burned severely. T B Walker 43 of Muscotah was slightly injured in a automobile crash.
Mrs. Ouiney Cochran aged 26 dislocated her right shoulder falling at her home. She was admitted to Lawrence Memorial hospital for treatment. The physician described her condition as satisfactory this afternoon. Mrs. Cochran is the mother of Mrs. R. W. Moll of 412 West Ninth Street.
