Iraq marks sovereignty day as U.S. pullback begins
Baghdad celebrated National Sovereignty Day while U S combat troops pull back, with Iraqi forces patrolling and checkpoints tightening as militants hit Kirkuk with a deadly car bombing killing at least 33 and wounding 90. The attack followed last week’s truck bombing that killed 82, signaling fears of renewed violence after the withdrawal. The United States reported four soldiers killed Monday, signaling ongoing dangers even as Prime Minister al Maliki urged vigilance and confidence in Iraqi security forces. President Obama urged patience and optimism, saying Iraq’s future lies with its people as security burdens shift to Iraqi leadership.
