KDWP sets migratory bird seasons and cabin fees
Kansas wildlife officials announced early migratory bird seasons with dates and bag limits for Rail Sora Virginia Snipe Woodcock and Teal across High Plains and Low Plains zones. Dove season splits into two segments Sept 1–Oct 14 and Nov 1–16. New cabin fees apply at Eisenhower Turtle Creek Mined Land and Ottawa wildlife areas. Whitetail antlerless deer tags allowed on Cedar Bluff. Fort Riley firearm deer seasons set for Nov 23–25 Dec 19–23 and Dec 2–30.

State pheasant numbers down despite drought relief forecast
Wildlife and Parks spring crowing survey shows a 32 percent drop in the statewide pheasant index to 14.3 crows per station, with 47 percent of 50 routes down. Biologist Randy Rodgers notes drought hurt last year’s production but warmer wheat harvest timing could boost fall prospects. Sixty-one of 63 routes were assigned. 55 were run amid muddy roads and floods.

Box turtles belong in the wild, expert says
Missouri herpetologist Jeff Briggler urges leaving box turtles in their natural habitat. He notes they need diverse wild foods and sunlight to stay healthy, and handling or captivity threatens their well being. He allows temporary keeping only to return turtles to their original area. Briggler advises guiding crossing turtles to safety.
