Tawten Lawton assistant secretary of the Lawrence Chamber of Commerce is named to succeed Irvin Youngberg as KU dormitories chief with duties to begin around July 1. He will study housing facilities with Youngberg and other university officials on a tour of colleges. Youngberg, KU graduate and veteran, has led dormitories for 2.5 years and will become secretary of the KU Endowment. Flora Boynton plans to remain in the Endowment office.
Kansas meteorologist S. D. Flora said conditions are ideal for the state with sunshine and warmth drying soil, reviving harvests, and enabling corn growth. A 24 hour moisture-free period ended this morning, easing flood threats as streams fell.
In federal court Melvin Austin and his wife Nellie testified they were paid to vote in the 1948 primary. They identified A. A. Williams, a former deputy Jackson county coroner and defendant, as the payment source. They said they did not mark their ballots. Roth testified ballots were marked for them by someone at the ballot box and a Democratic election judge in the same precinct.
Sixty stocks averaged a 71.2 change as part of a market summary. A notice directs readers to have the Journal-World mailed to their summer address and provides a phone number for advance requests.
The Douglas county 4-4 vocational fair will be held Thursday and Friday, August 26 and 27, at Haskell Stadium. Future Farmers of America members and rural youth in the 164-H clubs are planning exhibits in live stock, crops, and home economics, plus a livestock judging contest. Last year’s fair listed more than entries. Directors lead the effort.
The University of Kansas Music Camp band and orchestra will perform in a Sunday concert series in the outdoor theater and Hoch auditorium. World War II Memorial Association officials at the University of Kansas began a campaign to raise about 78,50 in pledges to finance the memorial. Letters will be sent to pledgers to boost the total and start construction. The fund total is about $205.00, with local drives in Kansas and elsewhere continuing. Committees are forming to supply more building information, and remaining bells in the 31bell carillon are valued at 10,000 12,500 and 13,000.
