Eisenhower Attack on Army Provokes Calls for Probe
Washington lawmakers criticized General Eisenhower for calling the US army a poor second to Russia. Representative Short urged a congressional inquiry into the army’s status and wartime readiness, accusing the testimony of propaganda for universal military training. Allen called the remarks surprising and questioned their meaning and implications for postwar policy. Eisenhower and the War Department had no immediate comment.
