Cotterill Transfer to Lawrence Office as Buyer and Manager

Roy L. Cotterill, longtime Poehler Mercantile Co. salesman at Mec Pherson, is reassigned to the Lawrence office as a buyer and sales manager. He will oversee items previously handled by George J. Soaring rents surge nationwide amid rent control limits lifted

Reports from multiple states describe sharp rent increases as ceilings were removed in most areas. In Miami rents jumped by one third or more with a 20 unit building in Miami Beach raising to 50 dollars a month. The Cleveland Plain Dealer notes many calls about hikes of 15 to 40 percent and a Cleveland Heights building raising monthly suites from 60 or 70 dollars to 75. A Colorado justice of the peace says he issued 1900 blank eviction forms under ten day notice law.

Cool day across Kansas with warming trend expected

Topeka reports a cool day with forecasts for a rise in temperatures to 82 to 85 statewide. Tonight's lows 60 to 66, with tomorrow's highs near 90 in the east and 80s in the west. Rain fell in southeastern Kansas over the weekend, with lighter showers elsewhere yet rivers remain within banks. City rainfall totals for the period include Wichita 0.66 inches and Goodland 58 degrees noted as cool last night. Wichita was the warmest city at 97 yesterday.

Ernest Pontius Elected International President of UCT

Ernest Pontius was elected international president of the Grand Counselors Association of the United States and Canada at a convention in Columbus Ohio. Pontius, a Kansas delegate, had earlier been elected state ment of the UCT in Salina. The group has 120000 members and next year’s convention will be in Detroit. Pontius has managed the Journal-War since 1940 except for two years in military service.

Lawrence observer C. J. Posey reports June 1946 in Sac City. The mean temperature 75.22 degrees, 54 above normal, with highs 101 on June 15 16 and lows 45 on June 3 4. Rain totaled 7.44 inches. June's six month total reached 20.20 inches. Sixteen hot days, 5 rainy days, 17 clear days, 6 cloudy days, 7 partly cloudy and 3 thunderstorms marked the month.

Truck and car collide near Lawrence Country Club

Last night at 8:30 a truck driven by Isaac Riley of 234 Illinois street collided with Fred B. Scott of Kansas City Missouri in the turnoff to the Lawrence Country Club on Highway 40. The impact forced the truck into a concrete bridge, crushing the Scott car front. Passenger Bertha Schleckenmaier, 73, suffered facial lacerations. The Scott car carried two other passengers.

Lawrence Real Estate Board to urge hold the line on rents
