Byrd Transatlantic Flight Ends With Ocean Landing Near Ver sur Mer
Commander Richard E. Byrd and crew of the America crash landed off Ver sur Mer France after fog and fuel shortages. They salvaged vital equipment, built a raft to reach shore, and rested with local hosts. Byrd reported bad weather all the way from the United States and hoped for a safe return pending repairs.
Byrd Plane Struck Water. Crew Rescued After Long Wait
Commander Byrd reported his aircraft plunged into shallow water after a flare and engine trouble near Ver-Shi-Mer. The landing gear tore off, the plane submerged to the wings, and the crew clung to the hull until a rescue by villagers. They waited two hours in rain before being sheltered. Byrd estimated 4200 miles flown from Roosevelt Field. Salvage chances were seen as slim as the plane broke up at sea. Citizens gathered in town hall despite bad weather to honor the aviators and their recovery efforts.
