Georgetown Law professors file class action in Maryland charging American Family Publishers with deceptive mailings designed to imply near winning the $11 million prize. The suit, part of past Florida scrutiny, cites prior marketing criticisms and distribution halts amid claims of empty-handed fans.
The Rev. Steven Sabin, a 38 year old pastor at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Ames, faces a church trial for violating Evangelical Lutheran Church in America rules that bar homosexual clergymen from committed relationships. The Southeast Iowa Synod charged Sabin after he refused to resign, with a verdict to decide defrocking.
Investigators sought 31 year old Eric Rudolph as a possible witness in a Birmingham abortion clinic bombing. A warrant to question Rudolph was issued though prosecutors stressed he is not a suspect. The blast killed off duty officer Robert Sanderson and critically injured nurse Emily Lyons.
The Commerce Department reports 1997 growth at 3.9 percent after inflation, with 1.4 percent price rise the smallest since 1963. Take-home pay rose 3.7 percent, unemployment fell under five percent, while forecasters expect slower growth ahead due to Asian financial turmoil and US labor shortages.
