Rafe Brown, curator for herpetology at the KU Biodiversity Institute, and team travel to the Philippines and elsewhere adding about 16,000 specimens in five years to a 4th largest global collection kept at 65 degrees. They preserve species despite controversy over killing specimens, noting discoveries like post extinction jar finds and five new species named from jars.

Collection by the numbers at KU amphibian and reptile exhibit
The KU collection features 2 floors of herpetology specimens and ranks 4th in the world for size. It holds 60 pre 1900 specimens, rooms kept at 65 degrees, and solutions with 70 percent ethanol. The museum contains about 550 holotypes and dates back to 1880 with the oldest specimen found by someone linked to KU. The total collection tops 330,000 amphibian and reptile specimens.
Preservation advice from expert on specimen care
The expert explains that proper preservation keeps specimens lasting generations by storing them in darkness and at the correct ethanol concentration. Reporter Brenna Hawley can be reached at 832-7217 for more information.
