William Goebel Shot in Kentucky Capitol Square
Frankfort Kentucky January 30 William Goebel Democratic candidate for governor shot while walking to the capitol. Five rifle shots fired from a third story window struck Goebel in the side and lung as he fell. He was quickly attended by doctors and carried to a hotel where guards blocked stairs. Initial exams warned the wound might be fatal but later reports suggested possible recovery. A suspect, Harland Whittaker, arrested after being restrained by a bystander, claimed innocence. The attack prompted heavy militia mobilization and widespread panic in Frankfort.
