Edwards Dike Scandal Ties Island Violation to 1974 Campaign

The Hutchinson Island dike case shows Edwards campaign for governor overlapped with a late 1970s investigation. The Army Corps of Engineers pursued a cease and desist, but work continued and a referral to the U.S. attorney surfaced just before the election. The case was delayed, then the partners later retroactively legalised the work, and the dike was finally dynamited in 1977. Edwards vetoed a tidelands bill keeping Hutchinson Island under state control. No punishment followed.
