Topeka attorney and former American Legion auxiliary president Mary H. Koger was named Kansan of the Year at the Native Sons and Daughters dinner during Kansas Day events. Born on a Beloit wheat farm, she became Topeka’s first woman lawyer in 1922 after Washburn Law School. Her early case involved a police officer’s leg injury from a motorcycle crash. she shared a legal fee with her late husband, Ollie L. Roger, who died in 1958.

James Messer 79 longtime Lawrence police figure dies
James A. Messer, a retired Lawrence police lieutenant, died Tuesday at the Tally Rest Home. He served from 1925 to 1951 with breaks for a university traffic post and later worked as a civilian traffic officer until four years ago. He oversaw parking ticket distribution and traffic during KU, Haskell, and local games.
