The Union Activities committee of the Memorial Union plans social events for both married and unmarried students at Sunflower village next semester. Henry Werner says the campus recreation center should host parties and gatherings. the first event is February 4 a dance in the Union lounge to meet University women. Alberta Cornwell chairs the seven person committee with Joan Woodward as vice president and Elaine Wells as secretary.
WALT NEIBARGER of Tonganoxie was elected president of the Kansas Day past presidents club during a meeting in Topeka. He succeeds John Dawson and Charles Harger, founders of the club, with Abilene hosting a 1895-era breakfast as one of the tradition, while Hall Bros. Inc offers 3100 monthly wages plus incentives for hallmark card handwork.
Edwin A. Acree alias Edwin A. Varlton, 44, arraigned before Commissioner Charles Springer in Lawrence on charges of falsifying postal savings records embezzling 1620 in postal savings funds and being fugit ive from justice. Springer bound Acres over to federal court in Topeka and fixed bail at 10000. Postal inspector Monroe said Acree, arrested at Sunflower Ordnance Works where he has served as superintendent since Jan 10 1948 under the name Carlton, committed offenses in 1937 while postmaster at Grove Land Florida. Acree’s wife and 6 year old son live at Sunflower Village. Fingerprints identified him. he was transferred from Radford Virginia plant of Hercules Powder two years ago. Acree’s first wife had divorced him.
Miami January 29 Lewis returned to the AFL CIO fold after a decade of split with CIO leadership. As a new AFL CIO Executive Council member he called the UMW return a definite turning point in American labor history. He said both unions would benefit from the latest merger and hailed AFL leaders at a joint press conference with AFL President William Green.
Maj T J Leasure a former Lawrence veterinarian returns with Mrs Leasure and their two children to make their home here and resume practice. He served five years and was separated last December after serving at Camp Swift Texas where he was station veterinarian. Definite plans will be announced later. A bond issue for a new airport is noted for St Francis Kan. January 29.
Topeka January 89 Governor An drew Schoeppel urged an end to secret dealings and urged veterans to back policies for the nation. Republicans packed hotels and homes as Kansas celebrated its 85th birthday with speeches by A J Cripe and others. Carlson received broad support for governor while candidates for lieutenant governor and speaker vied for the party’s nod.
On the first day of the second semester the Lawrence city schools reported 2861 pupils enrolled, down from 2893 at the start of the first semester, a drop of 32. A Nebraskan LP-A group of 217 county farmers voted a strike against strikes, citing needs for farm tools machinery bathtubs and refrigerators.
Chief Haucke heads Native Sons of Kansas with Topeka and Holmes councils sharing top posts. Mrs John Nelson leads Native Daughters of Kansas with officers including Mrs C I Mover and Miss Abbie Bellport. Lavon Mae Melcher of Senca wins the annual essay contest as over 1,000 high school students compete.
The Topeka city council voted to accept a bid from Seltsam and Co. and Beecroft-Cole to purchase $556,000 in general improvement bonds at 1 percent interest. Funds will cover police and fire building, a city garage, garbage equipment, airport expansion, and park extension. Bonds dated March 1, 1946, will mature over one to ten years. The contract includes a $10,000 good faith bond and allows conversion to marketable government securities to minimize interest costs.
KU registrar L C Woodruff reiterated his estimate of 600 new students for the upcoming term, plus at least as many veterans reenrolled. He cited the G L bill of rights allowing veterans to attend any university, noting eastern schools often reject due to full capacity. He warned enrollment at Kansas University will rise significantly as each student enrolls.
E L Alter long time leader of Co-Operette officers and international president of the organization died at Junction City hospital shortly after a heart attack while visiting with members for an Eastern Star meeting. She served as education sponsor for Beta Sigma Phi in Manhattan Kansas.
The Associated Press lists David V. Underwood of Tonganaxis and Lile E. Featherston of Overbrook as returning U S troops. They were aboard the Cape Perpetua, due to arrive yesterday at Seattle from overseas duty in the Pacific theater.
Lawrence city council moved toward declaring the town a first class city as population nears 15 000. A resolution would be sent to Governor Schoepfel noting Lawrence has exceeded 15 000, potentially triggering proclamation and a change in government form after the next census and April election.
Douglas County school reorganization boards convened at Willow Springs Township Hall with six district boards for ongoing planning. Today’s districts were 28, 84, 51, 64, 74, and 77. Tomorrow meetings will occur at the county superintendent’s office in the courthouse with districts 11, 12, 16, 55, 75 at 9 am and districts 21 and 29 at 1 pm.
Parsons Kansas reports a pair of runaway horses breaking a farm fence along the right of way and dashing toward a bridge. The animals collided with a bridge after fleeing across fields before being corralled by crews. No injuries are noted.
Dr Leona Baumgartner former head of New York City health bureau notes Europe needs food clothing and coal as thousands of French children suffer from cold and unsafe milk supply after WW II. She urges American citizens to donate to relief agencies and to establish contact with families abroad.
Community groups and volunteers in Lawrence organized a large relief clothing drive to aid people in war struck countries. Donated garments were sorted baled and packed at the Community building before shipment under the supervision of the Lawrence Women’s Club members and Senior Girl Scouts.
Elden M Brown of Osawatomie elected vice president of Lawrence National Bank. He has 21 years as cashier at First National Osawatomie and will relocate with his family to Lawrence. His daughter Gareta Ann is a KU sophomore and son Robert is a Navy ensign stationed in Japan.
Navy officers visit Kansas University for a morning conference with Chancellor Deane W. Malott and KU officials about the naval program and related contracts. Attendees include Lieut. Graham Lieut. Monk Capt. Chesnut Comdr. Baum and Raymond Nichols as updates continue over several days.
A two story seven room frame residence on the Foster Laming farm two miles east of Tonganoxie on highway 40 was burned about 10 this morning. Mr and Mrs F C Jetted tenants lost all belongings. Fire believed caused by short in wind charger switch box. Laming had insurance on the building, contents uninsured. The blaze was spotted by Mrs Duaosy.
Weather district forecast for Missouri Kansas Nebraska and adjacent areas shows a mild to warm trend with temperatures near normal in most parts and little precipitation. Kansas will see partly cloudy skies with possible light rain and cooler nights. warmer conditions expected elsewhere with variable winds and no major storms anticipated.
