Washington AP The Atlas ICBM launched Tuesday night from Cape Canaveral flew the intended range over the Atlantic Ocean. A Defense Department spokesman said early telemetry showed the test achieved most Air Force objectives and that the Atlas flew the programmed range though not the full ICBM range. The missile traveled slightly over 4000 nautical miles.
Engineer argues for a comprehensive city plan to prevent storm water flooding. He cites 22nd Street terrace and Naismith Drive and Brook Street as troublesome areas where sewer modifications and deeper natural channels could reduce damage. Officials seek to apply findings to the building code to align with natural water courses.
The planning group adopted a report on Belle Haven South sidewalk work and took final action on special assessments for Belle Haven South and Lawrence additions, set up sanitary sewers for Holiday and Northwood, appointed appraisers for assessments, and prepared ordinances. Republicans push a bill to raise unemployment benefits from 20 to 26 weeks and from 34 to about 40 dollars weekly, increasing annual costs by over three million. The bill aligns with labor requests on max weekly benefit but reduces proposed duration by four weeks. House Democrats earlier proposed 30 weeks. House Rules Committee tentatively approves one rules change. two Democratic proposals fail party line. Other items include public-vote records for committees, minority appointments, reapportionment bill prep, city school tax measures, state bid preference, and lieutenant governor salary hike.
Sen. Glee Smith says Gov. Docking's stance on a public employees retirement program would disappoint thousands of workers. He argues for credit for prior service and a living income for older staff, while Docking opposes such credits and prefers a plan with orderly retirement.
The State Revenue and Taxation Department develops a regulation requiring newspapers to pay compensating use tax on items used in production and sales tax on newspapers sold. Newspapers have been exempt for years under a regulation by the old Commission of Revenue and Taxation.
The Kansas Council of Women urged the 1959 legislature to study and support a three fold plan by the Board of Regents. The plan calls for higher teaching and research salaries, an adequately funded faculty retirement plan, and construction of classrooms laboratories and libraries. A blaze at 301 W. 23rd St caused about 3500 in damage, starting in the basement of Mr. and Mrs. George H. Hoofer and spreading to the Bob Means residence. Hoofer suffered a minor heart attack and was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital. his condition was listed as good. Fire Chief John Miller noted the oil furnace sparked the fire, which grew quickly before firefighters arrived.
Frank Burge director of the Kansas Union said work will begin in early March on a 900000 addition. Bids opened in Topeka show Lawrence firms as low bidders on three major phases totaling 895508. Construction should finish in 480 days with no tax funds used.
Memorial Hospital releases list of dismissals and births. Dismissals include Carla Jo Strain and several others. births report a daughter for Mr. and Mrs. Edgar Casebier and a son for Mr. and Mrs. William Newman, both in McLouth area.
The body of Harold Hinnies, 12, was found hanging from a tree behind his Rialto residence two hours after his parents reported him missing. Police Chief Sidney Jones said murder is suspected possibly by a sex offender. an autopsy will determine cause.
Fair employment practices bill seeks to empower the state anti discrimination board to address unfair practices. A bipartisan group introduced the measure, while a right to know bill would require open meetings for state, county and local officials.
In Alexandria Virginia Judge Albert V. Bryan denied Arlington County School Board's request to delay four Black students' admission to Stratford Junior High School. The court's order allowing the four to enter next Monday remains in effect.
