In New Mexico and Oklahoma the push for statehood failed as the house committee on territories rejected bills for Arizona New Mexico and Oklahoma by 8 to 3. Delegates from the territories pressed to be recorded for the measures but votes blocked enactment amid no prior discussion.
A jumble of dispatches reports the German cruiser Chartone arriving in Havana as British and French warships move toward the region from Key West and New Orleans, with further notes on naval seizures near Baluchistan and shifting river conditions in Mexico.
In Wiemia Kansas on January 21 Midland officials discussed extending the Kansas Midland railway toward Oklahoma to connect with the M K and T. The Wichita Commercial Club passed resolutions backing the scheme and offering support. If agreed, branch work could start in spring with Sedgwick County seeking 240000 in bonds. Some townships along the route have already raised funds despite Oklahoma Territory’s voting ban.
Denver January meeting of the National Stock Growers convention opened with full attendance. A committee from each state drafted the constitution and by laws. J. H. Neff and J. W. A Spokane fire in the Great Eastern block likely killed nine people including Mins Allee Wilson, Maud Wilson, Roye Smith, Mrs. I. G. Davies from Nebraska City, and mining engineer Peters and his two daughters Ethel and Alan. Charles Peters may have perished or been saved. Local hospital treated several victims.
Jan 26 At New Cambria Missouri Professor A E Park was cleared after county court of inquiry found Park acted in self defense when his student Prell White was struck by a poker. White remains semi conscious with poor prognosis. Witnesses testified to Park's defensive actions.
Rev E D Ballev, chief clerk, testifies to Senate Civil Service Committee about chaotic management at the commission. He cites questionable appointments, loss of rules, and lack of uniformity across the office. He urges immediate remedial action and three leadership changes to avert disaster.
A Kansas farmer Keopfinger allegedly tried to kill his wife and daughter near Atchison. Farmhand Gus Williams intervened, Keopfinger fatally slashed himself with a knife. Williams was badly injured but nonfatal. The women were unharmed. A separate report notes Cora Hubbard and accomplices in a Pineville bank robbery case en route to Jefferson City for twelve years’ hard labor.
St Louis reports a massive blaze at Union elevator East St Louis destroying property valued around 1 million dollars. The fire, aided by a northwest wind, consumes the building with 9,000,000 bunkers of grain and adjoining structures affected including the CB&Q freight house, cars, dwellings, and stables.
