A massive early morning fire devastated downtown markets and factories along Market Street in Philadelphia. Flames raced through Blumb Bros and Hirsch Bros buildings, destroying Showell & Fryer grocers and nearby shops. The blaze spread from a rear basement to engulf eight stories of the Market Street front, with water supply woes hindering containment. Insurance coverage limited net losses, with Hirsch Bros and several others among the heaviest losers. additional fires struck Lincoln and Omaha areas, totaling widespread damage across several cities.
