Plants Provide Pollution Control By ERLING T JACOBSON
The SCS Plant Materials Center in Manhattan Kansas studies grasses and other plants for erosion control and pollution reduction. An acre of good grass releases about 2400 gallons of water daily through evaporation and transpiration, cooling like a 70 ton air conditioner. The center maintains seed stocks of eight improved grass varieties and houses 800 grass and legume collections along with 350 woody plant varieties for conservation use.
