Shell Oil to pay 110 million over underpaid oil royalties
The Justice Department said Shell Oil Co will settle for 110 million, resolving alleged underpayment of royalties on oil from leased federal land from 1980 through 1998. The $392 million total recovery across 12 oil firms comes from a False Claims Act whistle-blower suit filed in U.S. District Court in Lufkin Texas. Two whistleblowers will share a portion of the settlement. The suit claimed 27 million acres across 21 states were affected and royalties based on past well head prices rather than fair market value.
