President Eisenhower outlined a plan to restore standby controls over consumer credit while telling Congress the economy is expanding at a tempered pace. He described the nation as approaching a 400 billion dollar economy after a year of rapid growth and urged debt reduction before tax cuts, noting the debt near 280 billion dollars.
President Eisenhower told Congress the U S economy nears 400 billion dollars in annual output with gains likely to continue in 1956 at a slower pace. He urged farm relief as the top job and proposed more liberal home repair loans and industry assistance in low-spirits areas. He also backed a six point antitrust plan and possible re enactment of consumer credit controls on big purchases.
The Kansas University School of Education schedules Thursday to begin moving into the remodeled Bailey Hall as the Department of Building and Grounds completes the major task. Final exams end Thursday and students depart for a short vacation while the $600,000 remodeling project nears finish. Keith Lawton, administrative assistant to the chancellor, says top floors are ready with basement work expected to finish in about 30 days. He leads the physical plant team overseeing the project.
The Wallington reports Sen Duff predicts President Eisenhower will announce a second term intention before April 20, the Tao primary date. Len Knowland enters Illinois race while Adlai Stevenson remains the lone Democrat. Duff says the President will seek a second term and likely decide well before the Illinois primary.
Gov. Fred Hall called W. L. White of the Emporia Gazette a political enemy of long standing after White demanded public disclosure of funds behind Hall's radio and television series. White estimated costs could reach 120000 across five to six programs on 26 stations, and urged disclosure of donors and amounts. Hall declined to comment on pending state government investigations and said he had not reviewed the resolutions.
The Santa Fe San Diegan derailed after a 15 meter curve at 70 mph killing 25 and injuring about 150. Engineer Frank B. Parrish 61 said the responsibility was his, claiming he blacked out and did not know the speed. An inquest was set for Feb 3 as relatives identified most victims at the county morgue.
State Accident Records Section reports traffic deaths in the last 24 hours and year totals. To date in 1956 the figures show 2 deaths in the latest period, 33 for year to date, compared with 42 for the same period in 1955.
Boston riders can no longer buy gum peanuts or weigh themselves on penny vending machines after a vending firm removed more than 500 penny machines and scales from the Metropolitan Transit Authority platforms. A spokesman said selling for a penny is no longer economically sound.
The first major appropriation bill of the legislature’s budget session passes the House 17 to 0 after sharp cuts. House Bill No 9 targets operating funds for more than 20 state agencies with 182000 dollars trimmed from the general fund and several hundred thousand from fee agencies. Rep. Howard Bentley led the largest cut cutting 319,890 from the State Corporation Commission’s request, claiming fees should go to the general fund. A study on the commission’s finances was proposed in a night session. Bentley said the commission could use the emergency fund if needed.
Light snow persists in Northeast Kansas with scattered accumulation through Wednesday. The period marks the first significant moisture since October, bringing Lawrence inch numbers to near five inches for January and keeping temperatures in the low 20s for days.
Secretary of State Dulles said the United States and Britain have discussed a formula to limit atomic and hydrogen bomb tests for two years. He noted many technical difficulties and no talks with the Soviet Union. Eden plans to visit, and Dulles expects discussions on foreign aid and policy toward Israel and Arab states. He also cited continued Geneva talks with Red China and opposition to Bowie’s nomination.
Two traveling salesmen in a restaurant near Lawrence were mistaken for armed bandits after a jewelry store robbery in Independence. Police pursued their car from Topeka and Leavenworth County, surrounding the Airport Corner before clearing the men of any crime. The incident began when three armed men staged a robbery the night before and were last seen in a car with Illinois plates.
Brown, a 30 year old former convict, confessed to kidnapping and killing Wilma Allen, a 34 year old Kansas City mother, after waiting in the Brookside shopping district. He led police to the car and described driving to Johnson County where she was killed while a federal case heads toward possible death penalty.
City Engineer E J Allison reports 1955 projects totaling 812240 dollars for street drainage and sewer work, the highest on record. About 220220 dollars in contracts are under way and 20 more projects are planned or under contract, signaling another busy year ahead. The largest single 1955 project is a 176744 dollar relief sewer serving south and west Lawrence, within the city’s 2 million expansion program supervised by consulting engineers.
As of 9 a m today the State Highway Department issued a road advisory noting northeast roads slick from packed snow while north central areas report about one inch of snow with slick patches. Northwest sees one inch in west and three in east with ongoing light snow. Southeast reports three to four inches with slick, hazardous roads. South central and southwest areas expect accumulating snow and freezing mist making all roads slick and hazardous.
Lawrence ministers will appeal at church services this Sunday for gifts to add a chapel in the Lawrence Memorial Hospital’s new wing. The drive aims to raise 4000 dollars, on top of 1200 already collected, with memorial gifts common so far. Reverend Robert C. Swift leads the local effort, noting hospitals benefit from spiritual as well as physical care and the chapel would be a modest, non building addition.
Twelve Lawrence High seniors are named Summerfield and Watkins scholarship candidates for Kansas University. Seven boys seek Summerfield awards, five girls pursue Watkins grants after faculty-selected nominations announced by Principal Neal M. Wherry.
A five day outlook covers western Nebraska eastern Colorado and western Kansas with the Oklahoma Panhandle. Temperatures near normal to 10 degrees below in southeast Kansas and eastern Oklahoma. Snow is likely in Nebraska and Kansas with rain and snow in Oklahoma early and later in the period.
