Mexico recalls entire Moscow legation staff in protest against Communist activity abroad and at home. Genaro Estrada says the Mexican minister to Moscow ordered to leave, with charge d’affaires and embassy personnel directed to depart. He notes demonstrat ions against Mexican embassies in Washington Buenos Aires and Rio Janeiro were cited as context.
The House expenditures committee voted 8 to 7 to summon Mabel Willebrandt, former assistant attorney general, to testify on the Williamson bill transferring prohibition enforcement from the treasury to the justice department. Debates over gag rule and broadened hearings followed as others appeared before the committee.

The Chamber of Commerce announces a new policy requiring solicitors to carry approval cards signed by the secretary. Temporary signs on member business windows inform would be solicitors to obtain an approval card. Permanent cellophane transfer signs will replace them, and offices will display silver signs detailing the solicitation agreement terms.
Governor Henry S Caulfield denied a requisition for extradition to Kansas for Dr Joseph H Freedman of Kansas City Missouri charged in Crawford County with third degree arson The case involves a plan to burn a car to recover insurance Nuccio implicates Freedman after arrest in Crawford County Kan for burning the vehicle
C F Nevett of Commerce and Elmer McMain of Commerce Oklahoma pled guilty in Kaw district court to arson in the destruction of a Coffeyville residence. Nevett received five to seven years in state prison while McMain drew one year in Montgomery County Jail. McMain admitted starting the blaze after an agreement to share money.
A Wichita district court jury awarded Mrs. Bessie Phillips five thousand dollars for injuries from a collision caused by her husband’s car into a viaduct abutment on December 27, 1927. Phillips sued the city of Wichita for ten thousand dollars.
The Chamber of Commerce campaign will continue until Tuesday noon as fund shortfall is $1,287 of an $18,425 budget. Leaders H C Constant and C B Holmes report $17,138 raised, with a historic membership level and strong mercantile coverage. Enthusiasm ran high at last night's meeting, fifty more members expected, and divisions led by Curfman McDonald and Meese are closing in on the top spot.
Rescue crews moved through the northeast Arkansas flood in frigid waters to reach about 200 cold families marooned in the Big Lake area. Food medicine and fuel were hauled to openings hacked in the ice. Red Cross teams cared for those rescued at a Roseland camp as levees failed and livestock perished or drowned along the St Francis river basin.
Oslo informs the United States that Norwegian whalers will do their best to assist Admiral Byrd. The whaling association says the ice barrier may break up as in prior years, enabling contact with open water. If Byrd runs short, a factory ship could be sent to provide provisions.
In Topeka the Kansas Day Club announces crowd arrangements for Kansas Day events next Wednesday. E H Helm says the Chamber of Commerce will house overflow visitors in private homes as hotel rooms are nearly fully booked. The club expects several thousand attendees for the 69th statehood anniversary, including more than 1100 at the annual banquet Wednesday night.
The senate kept hides leather and shoes on the free list after declining a 10 percent ad valorem tariff. Borah led western Republicans and joined 20 Republicans and 25 Democrats plus one Palmer-Labor senator in supporting no duties. The vote was 46 to 28 to retain free entry for hides and related goods.
Missouri football receipts for the last year topped all MTI history, as athletic director Laday noted. The season net profit tallied by the Missouri committee on intercollegiate athletics set a new single season high, with a record gate take of 40,188.25 dollars in the Tiger-Cornhusker game played in Lawrence last October.
Fire of undetermined origin destroyed an occupied dorm and damaged two others in Columbia Missouri at 4 30 am driving about twenty University of Missouri women from bed in subfreezing temperatures. No injuries reported. Damages estimated between 10600 and 12000 dollars. The home of Ben F P Baker was destroyed with many contents lost. Nearby houses hosting women students were only lightly damaged.

Stanley A. Harris of New York addressed the Kaw area Boy Scouts council in Lawrence, announcing a new scout leaders training course at Haskell Institute for Indian leaders. The meeting added Anderson Coffey Linn and Lyon counties, set a 1940 budget, and outlined training goals, rallies, and district plans for the coming year.
A six day probe into speculative securities operations by a dozen or more firms in south central Kansas ended temporarily when M H Barnes of the state banking commission was summoned to Topeka. Carl Newcomer, in charge of blue sky enforcement, said the probe would resume January 10. Barnes urged stationing a state operative here for weeks to continue the inquiry, which covers Sedgwick Sumner Cowley and Reno counties and includes commercial aircraft manufacturers and video med( ?) medias. Jake Moellendick, a pioneer in the local airplane field, was questioned yesterday.
A civic pool is being formed by leading business interests to float Chicago the county and the school board from a no funds dilemma. The pool aims to buy 50 million dollars in tax anticipation warrants to cover government needs until reassessment is completed and 1928 tax bills are collected. The citizens relief committee, chaired by Silas H. Strawn, is organizing it. Cash shortages have caused postponement of pay for over 40,000 city county and school employees and deliveries to school buildings may be withheld unless past due bills are paid.
Douglas County reports three natural gas wells south of En dora producing from fall start. Flows range 490000 to 600100 cubic feet daily with gas used to power a nearby digger on the fork. The wells are located on several farms including McBride and Artur Oltspoluerdt, with notes of cold weather slowing operations.
Secretary Stimson told reporters progress at the American naval conference is satisfactory while talks continue. An official note said the French and British delegations met to consider a report from experts, showing encouraging results on certain points and plans to continue discussions. Stimson stated he could forego three adviser seats at plenary sessions to allow three American associations to participate, noting criticisms over excluding the press from meetings but citing space as the only reason.
In Chanute Kansas a blaze leveled the Mercantile building. O R Nelson Peerless Oil and Refining secretary treasurer and Charles McQuin and John Jordan firemen were slightly hurt as Nelson descended by rope from the third floor to the second then to a ladder that broke. A water stream knocked McQuin from a floor. The Peerless offices were on the third floor and Rosenthal mercantile occupied the first and basement. Six men slid from the third floor as fire broke out.
Liberty Memorial high school vocational agricultural class 1928 29 reports total net profit of 4013.60 from ten projects run by twenty nine members. Potatoes led with 2193.11, dairy 871.48, beef 8.00, poultry hog and corn projects also listed. Details cover project counts, acreage, cattle hogs and orchard outputs, costs of production, and a simple cost accounting system used by the students. Names of participating students are provided.
