At east of Spa Beale the steamer Valencia wreck left forty four passengers and sixty crew. A salvage steamer reached the scene but waited for daylight to aid those aboard. Survivors report at least fifty drowned after being lowered to the sea. By morning over 100 people remained on the submerged vessel as gale winds of forty miles per hour lashed the scene.
