Lawrence Aids War Effort Through Meatless Wheatless Days
In Lawrence Massachusetts during World War I citizens and restaurants followed government food rules with meatless Tuesdays and wheatless Wednesdays. By Jan 16 1918 most eateries on Massachusetts Street pledged compliance, including Bricken's and Lee's College Inn, and Supreme Cafe later joined. The city aimed to lead the state in observing these days. Meatless means no beef mutton pork or animal fats while wheatless means no wheat in public offerings wherever practicable.
