Rescuers Find Bodies Of Miners In West Virginia Mine
Rescuers found the bodies of two miners, Don Bragg and Ellery Hatfield, in the Alma No. 1 coal mine near Melville, West Virginia, raising total job fatalities to 14 since Jan. Two others escaped as a conveyor belt fire trapped a 12 member crew. Governor Manchin pledged emergency reform and rapid response measures. Massey Energy owner Don Blankenship attended the briefing with state officials. The mine’s blaze persisted despite hours of rescue work and a failed 200 foot shaft contact attempt.

Investigators enter Sago mine to start repairs
Federal investigators entered the Sago Mine for the first time since 12 miners were recovered earlier in January. The plant remains idle with power disconnected, as a special mine team begins reviving water pumps and repairing ventilation in a cautious reopening. Randal McCloy Jr. remains in a light coma. Nearly 60 percent of workers rejected UMW help, nominating three co workers to represent them.
