Study links drug errors to millions in hospital costs
A study in JAMA shows that prescribing and administration mistakes cost U.S. hospitals billions yearly. In two Boston hospitals, 1.4 percent of patients had reactions over six months in 1993, adding about two days and $4,685 per patient. Extrapolated, a 700-bed teaching hospital faces about $5.6 million annually, with $2.8 million from preventable reactions, while overall drug reactions raise average extended stays to $2,595. A 1990-93 LDS Hospital study found similar costs and stays.
