Washington January 22 President Truman said he does not approve former President Hoover’s view that European recovery aid should be limited to fifteen months. He urged Congress to approve a four year program and to appropr iate six billion five hundred forty one million dollars for the first fifteen months. Hoover recommended trimming and separating charity from business and cautioned against a formal moral commitment. In Jerusalem Hagana reports heavy fighting with Arab villagers Yagur near Tel Aviv resulting in several deaths on both sides. Official tallies vary but casualties rose as clashes continued at roadblocks and mortar fire.

Four Men Killed in California Quarry Blast
Four men in a blasting crew were killed at the California Portland company quarry in Colton after a powder explosion. The blast shook nearby buildings and shattered windows in Colton, about three-quarters of a mile away, and was heard as far as 16 miles from the site.

Somers Memorial Carillon Bell Set Aside at KU
Fred Eflaworth announced a $500 bell memorial for Lt. John G. Somers of the KU class of 1942 who was killed in action near St. Malo France in August 1944 after earning the Silver Star. The Kansas memorial carillon will total 52 bells, with 12 already dedicated as individual memorials.

Plane missing on Denver to Grand Junction flight
A Civil Aeronautics Administration C 47 disappeared after reporting severe turbulence and snow squalls at 14 500 feet during a Denver to Grand Junction patrol. Three men aboard were Pilot Fred Snavely co pilot Warren Lo Ling strum and Ross A. A. aeronautical inspector. The aircraft based in Kansas City carried eight hours of gasoline on the two hour mission. Search teams scanned the Rocky Mountains west of Denver for the missing plane.

A Hubbard Tank a two foot high keyhole shaped water therapy tub is nearly ready in a basement room at K U hospital to aid polio victims and others with muscle or arthritis issues. Drs Rose and Canuteson described its use for warm water exercise aiding movement and recovery. The device, donated by Tom Poor of Olathe in memory of his daughter Melissa who died of polio, faced delays before becoming operational after the project began in her convalescence.

May bylaws plan to enlarge city planning commission
The city council will consider expanding the planning commission from seven to eleven or more members at Monday night session. Mayor James H. Parsons said the commission could include two members from outside the city within three miles. Current terms of several members expire February 1, and the mayor may appoint replacements at the February meeting if approved.
