Meteorologists foresee gradual warming later, yet many roads remain blocked by drifts as El Dorado fights a hardware store blaze.
Washington January 22 The Leavenworth federal prison riot was blamed on poor food before the House Subcommittee on Appropriations Sanford Bates superintendent of prisons testified They serve 9 meals a day from one kitchen with 1009 inmates at a time He said poor preparation and food sparked the riot A representative from the bureau has been sent to study the situation and a supervising steward has been set up to keep dietaries and standards in check as part of prison discipline

Leavenworth Jan 22 The Leavenworth Times reports a unanimous parole recommendation for Dr Frederick A Cook Arctic explorer and oil promoter serving 14 years nine months for mail fraud. Board to vote and no opposition was noted health and prison record cited. Cook has served nearly five years since 1923 parole decision now in Washington.
Bh Rogers Kansas University freshman and brother of film star Buddy Rogers has been ill in the student hospital. Diagnosed with empyema, he showed improvement after days of critical condition. Bert Rogers, father and former Olathe Mirror owner, travels from California. Ed Rogers also ill, taken to hospital, prognosis cautious. Parachute jumper Bert White trial postponed until March 4 at Sedgwick county court.
Washington AP report shows a massive rise in radio readiness from 60 000 homes in 1922 to at least 10 million now. W D Terrell cites audience growth from 73 000 in 1922 to over 40 00000 this year and notes radio sales near 60 000 000 for 1922 with exports rising to 2 800 000 and 310 907 000 by 1928. The estimate also says 19 000 000 homes lack radios and industry believes no saturation point is near.
Wichita, Kan, Jan 22 AP Peggy Emery 18 and Tone Klaus 20 Oklahoma college students turned fire fighters after Earl Finkle’s pajamas caught fire. Finkle stood near an open stove in a house hall and dropped a blanket to smother the blaze. He is badly burned but expected to recover, attendants said.
In persistent snow and freezing temperatures many birds, including quail, suffer from lack of food as ground cover remains. Citizens and farmers are urged to feed wildlife while authorities seek aid and rescue resources from the Red Cross for the region.
Old Man Winter intensified a severe cold snap across Lawrence and Douglas counties with readings of 18 below zero overnight and 15 below at 7 am, warming to 4 above by noon as a weeklong cold spell continued. J S Wade, an employee of the Kansas Electric Power Company in Lawrence, won a company speaking contest held at Eagles Hall for district employees. Wade advances to regional contests in Emporia, Leavenworth, and Parsons, with eventual state, territorial, and national rounds and prize money up to 800 dollars for runner up and 250 dollars for third place. The event featured remarks by W S Vivian of the Middlewest Utilities and Reuben S Fox elected chairman for six months.
Wichita Jan 22 AP says Bay well near Raymond by Boucher Co of Ponca City Okla will gas at nearly 11,000,000 cu ft. Arrangements are reported for the Kansas Pipeline Co to take the gas into its line between Great Bend and Lyons, linking central Kansas towns to statewide supply.
Kansas City January 22 AP The Kansas City board of trade directs its agricultural committee in Washington to condemn the Marketing Act as unfair socialistic and beyond government interference. The resolution accuses the act and Farm Board measures of arbitrary, far reaching dangerous effects on business and ending years of agitation.
John B. North, chairman of the Leavenworth county Republican central committee, announced Mayor Jim G. Johnson of Leavenworth will run for governor. Johnson, elected last year, has cleaned up Leavenworth, backed by business and road-thinking citizens, with a slogan of state improvements and conservation. He did not comment. North spoke as his spokesman during Lawrence visits and a Topeka trip.
Lee Derry of Poplar Bluff, Missouri, has passed the exam and been appointed a flying cadet at the Army Air Corps training school at March Field, California. The former Missouri University football star is awaiting trial in Columbia for alleged theft from another student and is currently employed on a construction crew in Poplar Bluff.
Mrs. Thomas E. Daniels of Leavenworth and her sister Mrs. L. W. Atkinson of Kickapoo celebrate living in Kansas since 1852. They settled on Kickapoo island before statehood and have remained residents for 88 years. Daniels is 81 and Atkinson 78, with the old Kickapoo Mission site still visible on Atkinson’s property.
Police arrested four men at a Kansas City hotel poker game after Karry J. Wheeler suspected a $10,000 fleece plot. Suspects named Roy C. Cline Ray Mosher Sam Jehmson and Frank Moss. Wheeler said Mosher a wealthy Indian was at risk in a real estate scheme. Wheelers said Cline posed as Mosher's guardian. Police call the men co conspirators.
A midnight blaze partially destroys a Catholic parsonage at 220 Vermont Street. Rev. Father Henry Fitzgerald and housekeeper Lillian Noud escaped with help from Roy Lawrence’s home at 1213 Kentucky Street, as firefighters battled the four hour fire. Two hydrants, stiff from cold, hampered efforts. two firefighters were injured stepping on ice and in a nozzle strike. Damages include burning roof, smoke and water damage, with early estimates near 7 60 0 but insurers covering contents. parish plans to rebuild after assessment.
Chanute Kansas January reports from the AP say trials of the fourth highway division expect main roads blocked by snow since Monday night to be open tonight. Roads now clear from Kansas City to Coffeyville via Lawrence and Kansas City to Pittsburg. Two weeks of snowbound damage have produced many broken naments. The low temperature dropped to 15 below zero.
Kansas City January 28 AB reports the exclusion of Dr Burris A Jenkins and his Linwood Boulevard Christian Church from a royal missionary society formed last night by Disciples of Christ affiliated churches. R A Long supported the action, noting Jenkins’s liberal preaching and teaching.
Parsons Kan January 29 AP James Hofman state board of health member traveled to Oswego and Edna with Dr Stevenson to probe conditions after two high school students died from spinal meningitis. City schools closed after a second death. Lutheran service at Trinity postponed due to cold weather.
Silas H. Strawn, chairman of a citizens committee, said Chicago city county and school board are critically desperate and flat broke with no bank aid in sight. Efforts to raise funds from tax warrants failed, and a cash solution is needed within days or a special legislative session could not help in time.

Corning Missouri residents, facing encroaching Missouri River waters, completed a plea for federal aid. War Department decision pending on eligibility for river improvement funds. Lt. Col. George B R Spalding stated Corning is in danger and will report to Army Engineers chief Lytle R. Brown. Local reps from Craig Oregon Mound City Forest City and St Joseph supported aid, noting Corning as a potential wharf site between St Joseph and Omaha.

Topeka reports fire losses in 63 of 105 counties totaled 320595, down 203529 from December 1928. Fires numbered 299 in the same period. Bethany records 32 degrees below zero at 8 am. Classified ads note money makers and services.

Two Ford roadsters hauled 800 rabbits through freezing weather from Centralia Kansas to Kansas City where the bounty was sold to the highest bidder. The rabbits owned by Jodia Cole Earl Crawford and Forest Shade were mostly shot or caught in the last week. This year the trio has marketed about 12 900 rabbits in Kansas City with weekly loads bringing roughly 14 cents per rabbit.
Margaret Eaton, 18, was taken to county jail in Kansas City after being found faint in a theater. Her father said she faked illness to avoid hospitalization and return home. Police charged her with deception as investigators probe her story.
