KU Juniors to Aid USD 497 Teachers

Kansas University juniors will serve as teacher aides in Unified School District 497, with about 160 students involved. The program, announced by Assistant Superintendent Robert Ramsey, starts next spring and pairs KU students with Lawrence teachers for 16 weeks, improving classroom support and allowing observation and seminars.

Arab Saboteur Clash Ends with Israeli Killings Near Ein Yahav

Israeli patrols killed six Arab fighters in two attacks near Ein Yahav and Rafah in the Gaza Strip. An Arab woman was also killed during a Rafah demonstration. Egypt's Nasser told the new assembly that Arab lands will be liberated and refused direct peace talks with Israel while arms stays in place.

Lawrence Memorial Hospital confronts peak patient load

Lawrence Memorial Hospital administrator Rodger Johnson says the facility can handle a recent surge with 140 adult and pediatric patients plus 12 newborns not in the census. He notes beds expanded last year and plans to discharge elective admissions to ease demand. Johnson expects a new high later this month.

Tax Reform Bills Listed by Hodge

Senator Frank Hodge announced that his Assessment and Taxation Committee authorized committee bills on tax reform. Proposed measures would freeze property tax at 1969 levels through 1972, require state revenue sharing with subdivisions, expand the State Board of Tax Appeals from three to five, extend county boards of equalization terms, and cut the assessment rate from 30 percent to 25 percent.

KU Laboratory Cart Stolen at Carruth-O’Leary Hall

Kansas University traffic and security officers report a laboratory cart valued at $60 was stolen from Carruth-O’Leary Hall. The 36 by 24 inch cart was reported by Bruce Klepinger, acting assistant professor of human development and family life at KU.

In Topeka a Kansas House measure would exempt low and middle income residents from state income tax, with taxable income above 5000 dollars taxed. Other proposals include raising insurance taxes, college scholarships, a beverage container tax, and various exemptions and school bills.

Hearing Slated For DeSoto Man

A preliminary hearing is scheduled Thursday for Lester W. Grazier aged 22 of DeSoto Kansas. He is charged with first degree murder in the deaths of two people in the December 27 fire at Kansas State Hospital. The charge was amended from first degree arson and first degree manslaughter. Miami County Attorney Lynn Martin filed the amended complaint before Judge Brooks Hinkle.

Woman Fined and Paroled in Douglas County Shoplifting Case

Rosemary Merry Keeling 24 of Kansas City pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor shoplifting charge for items under 50 dollars after initially facing a felony count for two suits valued over 50 dollars from Weaver's Department Store. The incident occurred Aug 15 and merchandise was recovered, with a 3 day parole granted and $50 fine plus costs. Charles Harkins Jr. 23 faces Topeka center transfer under a grand larceny conviction with 1 to 5 years. Edgar Waters 21 of Olathe bound over on insufficient funds check charges totaling 116.85 to Campbell's Clothing Store in Kansas City.
