Kansans Look to Improve Services for Visually Handicapped Children

KU Bureau reports 80 percent of visually handicapped children in Kansas lack adequate educational services. Only eight percent are served by two local programs in Prairie Village and Wichita. Kansas ranks low among states with public school programs for blind children. Many children live outside major counties. few attend the Kansas School for the Blind or special deaf blind facilities.

Air Force exam set for Tuesday afternoon

The Air Force will administer the airman's qualifying exam at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Police Fire Building at 8th and Vt. Streets. The two hour test qualifies applicants for enlistment. Sgt. Frank Mallory urges Lawrence area men not yet tested to take it. The Kansas Centennial Buddy Flight plans to honor statehood and will travel to San Antonio, Texas for basic training.

Fire Officials Have No New Clues on North Lawrence Blaze

Investigators probe arson link to January 11 fire at the waste paper site in North Lawrence. The blaze, the third since July 25, 1959, destroyed about 250 bales of paper valued at 30 dollars per bale. Paper owned by Lawrence Paper Company.

Bus Lost in Blizzard Recovered Near Souris PEI

A school bus missing overnight in a blizzard was found shortly before noon on a desolate road between Selkirk and St. Charles, about one mile west of Souris. All occupants, eighteen children and the driver Stirling Burke of Fortuni, are reported safe. The Souris route had 24 children ages 6 to 16 with six dropped off earlier.

Gas Burst Triggers Major Ventura Blaze

An explosion at a natural gas compression plant near Ventura California sparked a large fire along the main supply line. Fire crews shut off gas flow and contained the flames within two hours though the blaze continued to burn in Hall Canyon. Nine firefighters were treated for burns. two men remained in serious condition as investigators probe the blast cause.

Local man Harold Bunce extradited on bad check warrant

Harold Bunce 24 of 704 Aah Street returned Friday night from Clear Lake South Dakota by Sheriff Fred Broecker on a warrant charging writing and passing a worthless check. Bunce waived extradition and probably will appear for a preliminary hearing in County Court today.

Two No Injury Wrecks On KU Campus Friday

Two noninjury accidents occurred Friday on the Kansas University campus. In Zone N near Allen Fieldhouse John R. Newlin pulled from a curb into Dr. Jack T. Brooking causing $150 damage total. Later at Jayhawk Boulevard and Poplar Lane James D. Jackson swerved to avoid a car and struck a parked car and guardrail, totaling $150 in damages.

Tugmen Reject Rockefeller Truce Plea in Harbor Walkout

New York tugmen refused Gov. Nelson Rockefeller's 10 day truce proposal during a 12 day harbor walkout that disrupts commuters and risks city food and fuel. Negotiations recessed, with a new meeting planned. unions call the plan dangerous to collective bargaining and favor remaining five man crews aboard harbor tugs.

Four injured in two-vehicle wreck at local intersection

Four persons were injured, none seriously, in a two car crash just after 9 20 Friday night at 14th and Ohio Streets. They received treatment at Watkins Memorial Hospital and were released. Names include Allen J. Cox 21 and passengers George Miles 18 Francis Kenney 20 Dennis Rice 18. The other driver Clarence E Gillam 58 was uninjured. Damage to both cars and a utility pole totaled 1725 and 475 for a separate accident at 6th and Mass Street.
