Lawrence official Rod Bremby, longtime water crisis figure, faced national scrutiny after denying Sunflower Electric Power Corp. an air quality permit for two coal plants. Supporters praised his stance against carbon emissions while critics claimed he caved to special interests.
Rod Bremby born in Eufaula Alabama 1960. In 1967 he and a classmate became the first Black students to integrate Eufaula Public Schools. An Army brat, he attended 13 schools before college. In 1972 he pitched and played shortstop for a Little League All Star team in Holland that reached the European Little League World Series in Spain.
The record traces Bremby earning a master's in public administration in 1984 as an early beneficiary of a federal program aiding minority and low income students in community development. He serves as an intern and later assistant in Fort Worth Texas. In 1990 he becomes Kansas first Black assistant city manager and No 2 in Lawrence. By 2000 he is associate director of KU Work Group on Health Promotion and Community Development.
Governor Bremby makes national headlines by denying permits for two coal fired power plants in southwestern Kansas citing concerns over carbon emissions and environmental impact. The decision highlights state leadership on climate policy and energy planning amid debate over cleaner energy.
An early morning two story fire at Heatherwood Drive forced about 20 residents from their homes at Valley Apartments. Firefighters rescued residents from second floor balconies. One resident suffered non life threatening injuries and was taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital for evaluation. Red Cross volunteers assisted displaced residents as David Gage of Gage Management Inc. managed the scene.
McCain survives South Carolina Republican clash for a key victory ahead of Florida. Romney wins Nevada GOP caucus in largely uncontested race. In Democratic caucuses Clinton leads Obama 51 to 45 in Nevada as precincts report. McCain holds 33 percent, Huckabee 30, Thompson 16, Romney 15 in South Carolina with 93 percent reported.
