President Johnson warned Congress that a $11 billion tax cut is essential to keep 1964 from slipping into recession. He cited a 44 percent rise in corporate profits and urged a steady wage and price policy while establishing an early warning system to curb inflation risks.
Former Georgia football coach Wally Butts filed consent in U S District Court to take a 2.6 million cut in his libel judgment against Curtis Publishing and the Saturday Evening Post. A January order required the reduction from 3.06 million to 2.6 million in damages over the 1962 Georgia Alabama game fix charge.

Former Gov. George Docking, director of the Export-Import Bank, is in critical condition at Bethany Hospital after abdominal surgery on Jan. 11. Lung congestion developed this morning, oxygen was given, and doctors were called. Richard Docking said his father, already limited by emphysema, was breathing with difficulty. Mrs. Docking and another son Robert, a banker, were en route or arrived as the family prepared for a possible return to Washington.
The Coast Guard located the balloon from the Santa Catalina Island crossing about four miles off Dana Point after grandmother Barbara Keith vanished during the race. No trace of Keith was found aboard or nearby.

Regents chairman Henry Bubb told joint Ways and Means committees that proposed cuts threaten progress, urging restoration to 83.6 million dollars for the board and schools. Gov.
