Mental evaluation ordered in murder case in Kansas
Gregor y Gales, 40, accused of killing his nephew Derek Wayne Haskell, 31, and setting fire to the house, is ordered by District Judge J Byron Meeks to report to Larned State Hospital for a 45 to 90 day mental competency evaluation to determine understanding of charges, ability to form intent for second degree murder, and ability to aid in his defense. Arraignment postponed pending evaluation.

Wichita restaurateur dies in Piedmont plane crash
A single engine Cessna piloted by 71 year old John N Savate clipped a power line and crashed in the eastbound lane of U S Highway 400 near Piedmont killing Savute and Harold L Gillette 69 of Valley Center. ConAgra may rebuild Garden City beef plant after fire
