Fan clubs defend embattled first lady

In Sonoma County a large Hillary Rodham Clinton Fan Club chapter and 13,000 members nationwide rally to defend Hillary Rodham Clinton amid Whitewater and White House travel office firing criticism. Members, many in government or business, say attacks unjustly target her character and note they identify with her as a public figure. The local group, coordinated by Rosemary George Straley, formed last year to support her through the political uproar.

Panel urges 24 hour nurse coverage in nursing homes

A 16 member panel led by the Institute of Medicine urged Congress to require registered nurses on duty at nursing homes 24 hours a day by 2000 to cut patient deaths and hospital admissions. The panel also called for more RN advanced training in hospitals and stronger monitoring of care quality amid shifts toward shorter hospital stays and home based care.
