AT&T signs historic $38 million anti discrimination settlement
The agreement with Labor and EEOC ends a large civil rights case against AT&T and 24 Bell system companies. It provides 15 million in back pay to about 15 000 Black and Spanish surname employees and women and 23 million in wage adjustments. The plan seeks more minority and female hires and notes the Bell companies deny discriminatory practices while resolving EEOC charges. NOW criticizes the back pay as small but calls the overall move substantial for remedy.
