Optimal cow herd size for efficient beef production
A beef extension report analyzes cow size and feed needs, noting higher maintenance costs for heavier cows. It finds that increasing weight raises feed use, with calf weaning weights rising up to 1,100 pounds but then leveling off. The recommendation favors cows weighing 1,000 to 1,100 pounds for efficient production and optimal calf size.
