City commission pursues rules for newspaper racks
Lawrence city officials push to regulate newspaper vending machines after a surge of racks downtown. Mayor proposals seek uniform placement and aesthetics amid complaints from residents and businesses about curbside installations, while The Hawk Sheet and Pitch Weekly contend over design and zoning impact. The plan, modeled partly on Coral Gables rules, aims to require rack registration, color schemes, and height limits ahead of a formal ordinance by May. Residents react with mixed views on regulation and free speech versus urban blight.
