Statistics show almost one in four Kansas children qualify for free school meals. Prenatal care coverage rose to 84 percent, up 2 percentage points. In 1993, single teens having children grew 42 percent to 3,422, and 19 percent of Kansas teens did not graduate high school.
The third annual 1995 Kansas Kids Count data book shows high immunization and high school graduation rates in Douglas County yet a rise in births to single teens. Single teen births rose from 58 to 94 in 1993, accounting for 8.7 percent of county births versus 10.9 percent statewide, per Nancy Jorn of the Douglas County Health Department.
The Lawrence City Commission unanimously allowed Tanger Factory Outlet Centers to add up to 15 new outlets and 58,500 square feet of retail space along North Third Street. The company must cover 75 percent of a new traffic signal cost when deemed necessary, with expansion expected to open by summer 1996. Mayor Jo Andersen hailed the decision as beneficial, while opponents urged longer review to gauge impact on downtown commerce.
