Washington confronts a cold start to Johnson's inauguration as forecasters warn of a significant snowfall and frigid winds. The scene mixes gala events and private parties with a sobering forecast of snow, cold temps, and potential travel disruption.
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was assaulted in the lobby of Selma Alabama's Hotel Albert as he registered with 11 other Negroes for voting. The assailant Jimmy George Robinson was arrested by public safety director Wilson Baker. King suffered only a minor headache. no serious injuries reported.
In Wichita Kansas the aftermath of a KC135 tanker crash killed 30 people including 23 residents and seven crew. Survivors mourn as identification proceeds and bodies move to funeral homes. Notables among the dead include Emmit Warmsley his wife and three children and Sharon Dale 15.

Fire at the Madl Implement Company in Baldwin caused an estimated 100000 in losses. The 100 by 40 foot quonset hut building housing five tractors and baling twine burned, with two tractors moved to safety. Damage partly covered by insurance and rebuild planned at the same site. The blaze started possibly from faulty wiring and was fought by Baldwin volunteers.
Sunny skies and moderate temperatures dominated the Lawrence area with similar conditions expected Tuesday. The Topeka forecast calls for fair skies through Tuesday with overnight lows 15 to 20 and highs near 40. Sunday's high was 45 and low 14 with 8 am reading at 20. Saturday’s highs and lows were 26 and 1. The all time high for this date is 69 and the record low is -11. Temperatures a year ago were 56 and 23.
TOPEKA AP Announcement of committee appointments in the Kansas House of Representatives has been delayed until Wednesday, Speaker Clyde Hill said today.
President Johnson told Congress the United States is stronger militarily than in peacetime history and outlined a 49 billion defense budget. He proposed three major new systems including the Poseidon missile, praised payload innovations, and SRAMs for wider strike capability, plus continued B52 life extension and new naval subs and destroyers.
London AP reports Sir Winston Churchill 90, experiencing a weakening, with medical bulletins from Lord Moran noting a restful night but ongoing decline. Moran described a peaceful day yet further loss of ground, as Churchill’s three surviving children and Lady Churchill remained at his bedside.
Lawrence schools conclude first semester with exams through Saturday January 30 at KU and area high schools. KU plans grades due February 1 and second semester fees Feb 15 to 19. Lawrence High School finals run Wednesday and Thursday with noon dismissal Friday. Haskell Institute exams Tuesday with no break. St John Catholic School finished first semester with report cards last week.
A three car crash on the Paseo bridge over the Missouri River Sunday night killed six people and injured three others. The southbound car borne by the Thompsons and Leonard Snow’s group perished in the impact with a northbound station wagon that swerved across the divider. Injured were Robert Catshall 36 and Bill Terry 29 in the station wagon. Leonard Snow 20 was hospitalized critically. Colin Cornett 31 and Kathryn Cornett 19 were involved in the third car.
