New York reports the Giuseppe Verdi rescued the entire crew of the Italian freighter Montello after the Montello sank following 27 hours of arduous work and very bad weather. Captain Mangamaro relayed the message noting the sinking and the rescue occurred early January 17 into January 18. The Verdi was to arrive Friday with the rescued mariners.

A lone bandit boarded Santa Fe train No. 6 near Lawrence and attempted to rob the mail coach. Mail clerks Judson Marvin, David Sanford, and A. H.
