Three more seek commission posts in Lawrence race

Three new candidates added to the Lawrence City Commission race to join Jack Rose. Albertson, Carter, and incumbent Mibeck file petitions as six or more candidates trigger a March 8 primary ahead of an April 5 general election for seats once held by Mayor Pence, Clark, and Mibeck.

Villee enters race for Lawrence District 497 school board

Georgann Villee 28 announced her candidacy as the first entrant for three open seats on the Lawrence District 497 school board. A Lawrence resident since 1969 she has been active as a volunteer, homeroom mother and PTA member while emphasizing time and interest for board service. Filing deadline is noon February 1 for the April 5 election.

Zoning and sidewalk plans on Lawrence city agenda

Lawrence city commissioners will consider a major rezoning request for 14 acres east of the Kansas Turnpike access road, a proposed Alvamar Estates sidewalks project, and a new neighborhood blight ordinance. Also on the 7 p.m. agenda are bids for three sanitation trucks, a police radar project, and other staff items.

Grant Township officials vow action to keep road open

Grant Township Trustee Don Palmateer vowed to press local and possibly federal officials to prevent the closure of a north Lawrence Township road tied to a proposed 5 000 foot airport runway. He said he has spoken with county leaders and may request a full county commission meeting while warning FAA involvement if needed.

Navy Promotions and Local Civic Dissolution Noted

Navy Operations Specialist 3c Charles J. Brown III, son of Charles J. Brown of Lawrence, was meritoriously promoted after graduation from Operations Specialist School. The East Lawrence Citizens for Housing Preservation group disbanded after a meeting with over 60 attendees, deciding to use its $75 treasury for neighborhood improvements. Gary Gilmore dies by firing squad after last minute appeals

University switches to fuel oil as gas shortage bites

KU moved to fuel oil on Saturday at the request of the gas company after sub zero temperatures strained supplies. Thermostats in KU buildings are set at 68 degrees as faculty return for a spring term. KU plans to revert to gas heat when temps rise and has a renewably assured fuel oil contract if needed. Kansas Power and Light promotes a free insulation program statewide to curb electric demand, with limited impact expected locally.
