Shanghai dispatches say Japanese spokesmen admit a Chinese threat to Hangchow as forces contest the city captured December 24. Chinese units reportedly penetrate toward Hangchow while other fronts see counterattacks and Chiang Kai-shek orders no retreat.
About 50 doctors from east and central Kansas attended the Kansas Medical Society session in Lawrence at the Hotel Eldridge. Dr. R. L Barney of Kansas City presided, with talks by Dr. L. L. Bresette, Dr. W. Urie, Dr. F. L. Loveland, Dr. M. W. Mills, Dr. E. C. Duncan, and Dr. Clarence G. Munns, who served as secretary, followed by a general discussion.
The Committee for Industrial Organization called a sit-down strike of 1000 workers at Crucible Steel Company of America in Harrison New Jersey. Organizers said workers sat at 8:15 am and aimed to halt all plant work while management reported 75 percent of strikers wished to keep working.
The first ice bridge of the season spread today over the Niagara Falls gorge in Niagara Falls New York with the cataract wearing winter finery. The ice sheet over the river was estimated at 10 feet thick.

Prosecution and defense say they are ready for trial tomorrow in Denver on four men accused of concealing microphones in Governor Colorado's offices. Defendants Erl H. Ellis Walden E. Sweet Jack Gimore and Walter Lear face eavesdropping and public nuisance charges carrying up to one year in jail and a $300 fine. The defense may seek to admit stenographic and phonographic transcriptions obtained through sales channels.
State Policeman C V Maine said Ghall Roosevelt paid a $100 fine for the driver of Mrs Roosevelt's car exceeding the Maryland 45 mile an hour limit. He and Patrolman Buckworth stopped the car after a three mile chase on the Baltimore Philadelphia road Saturday night. The chauffeur Alfred Pinto was driving 80 mph.
Washington reports little support from early congressional members for a government buyout of the largest private utility group in the Tennessee Valley. The idea was proposed by Wendell L. Willkie, president of Commonwealth and Southern, as a last resort in a desperate situation.
Knoxville report says TVA chairman Dr. A. E. Morgan is ill with a high fever at his Chicago hotel. The office released the update today.

A Senate judiciary subcommittee chaired by Senator Logan will hold a Thursday hearing on Stanley F Reed’s nomination to the Supreme Court. The committee also formed a subcommittee to study a bill creating 27 new federal judges and approved a measure to amend retirement law for DC court service by retired justices.
Kaw Valley potato growers meet January 22 at 10 a m in the Jenny Wren building to discuss 1938 problems including traffic rates the outlook for 1938 and the consumer side of potato growing. Kansas State College experts John O Miller Vance Rucker and S W Decker will present analyses and a Kansas Potato Show board election will follow.
An alert guard wounded two escapees and halted a breakout by five long-term inmates at Illinois state penitentiary. Donald Loftus led the attempt, after overpowering Keeper Edward Monahan who was bound with belts and gagged. Guards fired, wounding Loftus and another inmate as the group fled toward the 22-foot wall, but all five were captured within minutes. Twenty-two workers witnessed the escape bid.
A burning oil well in Kilgore Texas threatened downtown structures as flames rose about 50 feet. Five hospital patients were moved from Crane Memorial hospital as fire crews from Longview, Henderson and Overton fought the blaze. A commercial firm planned to pump mud into the shaft while nearby wells remained in production with no immediate danger.
Wichita editors pledge support for murals in the Kansas state capitol at Topeka. The Kansas Press Association endorses preliminary work by a commission named by Gov. Walton Haxman with Jack Harris of Hutchinson as chairman. They plan a campaign to raise 20000 dollars in public subscriptions to fund the work. preliminary sketches have been approved.

New York City Mayor LaGuardia urged a federal public works program to combat the recession and called for uniform work standards. He pressed that WPA relief cover all jobless employables and that the U S Employment Service be brought under the Social Security Board with food from agricultural surpluses.
Lawrence pioneer Jonathan Flanders Morgan II died at his son Willard H. Morgan’s home on Ohio Street. Born January 20, 1856 in Lawrence, he lived there his whole life, farming and retiring 15 years ago. Funeral 2 p.m. Wednesday at Schubert funeral home. Rev. C. J. Knox to officiate. Burial Oak Hill cemetery. Survived by wife? no. he leaves daughter Mrs. J S Roberts Oakland Calif. sons Willard H Morgan and J F Morgan III of Lawrence. four grandchildren Erwin Elsie Lawrence and Jonathan, all of Lawrence.

Wellington reports Merle Sellers aged 19 from Milan died in hospital as the second victim of a plane crash near Milan on Sunday. Charles Lauterback 21 of Mayfield also died in a Wellington hospital hours after the two cylinder craft crashed into a wheat field. Witnesses described the aircraft dropping from about 100 feet during a banking turn after takeoff.
Federal troops were sent to aid a cavalry detachment reportedly ambushed in the Sierra of Puebla. The fate of Capt. Jesus Mendez Sarmiento’s unit was not yet known and exact location remained unclear.

Winnipeg January 17 Western Union reported wire communications across western Canada disrupted by aurora borealis. The outage began about 11 am local time and soon cleared as system tests showed normal operation amid heightened electrical resistance from the northern lights.
Harrison Rose aged 38 of Route 1 Grayridge Missouri was struck by a motor car January 6 while walking near Grayridge. He was brought to Lawrence Memorial hospital with a broken right leg and will be confined there for some time according to his physician.
Associate Justice George Sutherland sat for a last time on the Supreme Court today, ending 15 years of service as age retirement takes effect at midnight. The court adjourned to January 31. Solicitor General Stanley Reed, nominated by President Roosevelt, sat in his usual position before the justices.

Topeka January 17 fair weather and mild temperatures are promised for Kansas tomorrow according to federal meteorologist S D Flora. Temperatures will rise in the east and south with 45 to 50 degree highs after subfreezing nights. Skies are mostly clear with no moisture reported though some northern and eastern counties show variation.
Six hundred Japanese sailors supported by naval and air bombardment were reported to have landed on the Chungshan coast in Kwangtung province the birthplace of Dr Sun Yat Sen. Heavy Chinese reinforcements moved in and fierce fighting followed near Chungshan about 60 miles south of Canton.

The Lawrence Birthday Ball funds for infantile paralysis will all go to the new National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis. Local trustees report $343.99 on hand and $184.17 spent on victims. a rehabilitation case is underway. The event is set for January 29 at the Union Ballroom on the University campus.
Marian Anderson, famed Negro contralto, arrived in Lawrence from Chicago. She will perform at 8:20 PM in Hoch auditorium, University of Kansas, with box office open at 7:30 PM. Program includes Bizet Agnus Dei, Schubert Ave Maria, and four spirituals. Kosti Vehanen is accompanist.
Helen Sullivan 26 hotel telephone operator died of burns from the Plaza fire. She remained at her switchboard to aid guests, then her dress caught fire and she escaped through a wall of flame. Three other lives were lost in the blaze three weeks earlier.
Pi Bert Smith, 33, oil field worker, died in a collision between a motor car and a gasoline transport truck at the east city limits Saturday night. Four others were injured including Mrs Bert Smith and Mrs Campbell in critical condition while Patsy Campbell and Dwight Gamber escaped serious harm. Smith had recently moved from Wichita.
