Pell Grants fall short as Kansas aid lags national norms
A report to the Kansas Board of Regents shows 37 percent of four year university students in Kansas received Pell Grants last year, well above the national average, while the aid now covers about 63 percent of tuition. Regents leader Andy Tompkins links higher tuition to greater family burden as state support falls. The review ties Foresight 2020 goals to expanding higher education attainment amid a separate national grade of F for Kansas student aid. Community colleges and technical schools also show declines in Pell recipient rates, down to 38.6 percent from 65 percent in 2011-12.
