California to collect back cigarette tax from online buyers
California residents who bought cigarettes online face letters demanding they pay an average of 112 per person for out of state purchases since January 1999. The Board of Equalization seeks 3,200 payers for 87 cent excise plus sales tax. Few smokers pay voluntarily and state had not pursued collection until now.
